Geography situates this understanding of social and physical processes in the context of place, recognizing and exploring the vast differences in cultures, political systems, economies, landscapes, and environments around the world. Much of the newer developments in human geography are based on understanding the causes of differences and inequalities between places and social groups. Geography is an excellent framework for connecting other fields of knowledge. It is not surprising that geographers frequently contribute significantly to the applied management of resources and environments. In terms of the UPSC civil services exam, geography is an important subject. It is included in both the UPSC prelims and main exams. Geography is another optional subject offered by the commission, and by all accounts, it is a hugely popular one.
